Introduction
It is difficult to describe the scale and majesty of the Temples of Angkor.
Built by kings who were said to be incarnations of the gods, these incredible temple-cities were once home to hundreds of thousands of people, each built to outshine all its predecessors in scale and grandeur.
Itinerary
Day 1 : Siem Reap
On arrival in Siem Reap, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. This evening, enjoy the best of Cambodian cuisine and an Apsara dance performance. Watch as dancers, singers and musicians bring ancient Khmer culture to life in ornate silk costumes inspired by the wall carvings of the Angkor temples.
Day 2 : Temples of the Grand Circuit
Depart on a full day tour to the temples of the Grand Circuit, which hug the shores of North Baray and include Preah Khan Temple, Neak Pean and Ta Som. Continue after lunch to Banteay Samre, Eastern Mebon and Pre Rup. Follow the shore of Sras Srang back to Siem Reap as the sun sets.
Day 3 : Ta Prohm, Angkor Thom & Angkor Wat
Depart early for Ta Prohm, where the magnificent tree roots have merged over the centuries with the temple’s huge stone blocks, and travel by tuk tuk through the forest to Banteay Kdei. In the afternoon, depart for Angkor Thom to visit its centrepiece, the Bayon Temple. Continue to the Terrace of the Elephants and Terrace of the Leper before heading to Angkor Wat, claimed to be the largest religious building in the world.
Day 4 : Siem Reap > Tonle Sap & Beng Mealea > Siem Reap
See colourful floating houses during a traditional boat ride on Tonle Sap Lake from Kampong Khleang, stopping for lunch in a traditional wooden house located on the shores of the lake. Then drive north for an hour to Beng Mealea, a 900 year old temple spread over several acres of jungle. Enjoy some time at leisure before transferring to the airport for your onward flight.
Note
If travelling during Chaul Chnam Thmey or Cambodian New Year, many shops, restaurants and businesses are closed during this period or may operate on a limited schedule. Departing Phnom Penh or Siem Reap by road may be difficult during this period since many locals will travel over the holiday as well. Flying between cities should be fine, although please allow for some delays and more traffic than usual. Local attractions in the countryside and around Phnom Penh will be crowded with domestic visitors, who usually travel with their entire family. It is recommended that during the Khmer New Year period, smaller local attractions like streams, waterfalls and parks are avoided as they will be very overcrowded with locals on holiday.
