Introduction
Easter Island, situated in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, is a mix of Polynesian and South American cultures.
This mystical Chilean island is endowed with ‘moai’ or stone statues, thought to be a representation of past ancestors. Myths and legends abound, with religions and beliefs epitomised in the island dances.
Itinerary
Day 1 : Arrive Rapa Nui (Easter Island)
Arrive on Rapa Nui (Easter Island) and transfer to your hotel.
Day 2 : Rapa Nui
Your journey today retraces the path of Rapa Nui’s inaugural King, Ariki Hotu Matu’a, during the island’s colonization era. Explore five captivating archaeological sites—three in the morning and two in the afternoon. The day begins venturing into the island’s past as you set foot upon three remarkable archaeological marvels during the tranquil morning hours. Ahu Tongariki, with its monumental moai statues rising against the horizon, Rano Raraku, the quarry where these colossal figures were carved, and Akahanga, an ancient ceremonial site steeped in enigmatic tales—all beckon you to delve deep into their historical allure. After your morning exploration, return to the main town for a satisfying lunch served at Hotel Taha Tai.
Following lunch, the adventure continues to the northern coast, where the tour unveils Te Pito Kura, recognized as the navel of the world. The final stop is Anakena, where visitors can witness two meticulously restored ceremonial centres adorned with an array of archaeological treasures, including moai statues, petroglyphs, and ancient dwellings. Take a moment to unwind amidst the pristine white sands and crystalline waters of Anakena’s beach, indulging in a tranquil interlude after this enriching expedition.
Day 3 : Rapa Nui
This morning, you will visit Ahu Akivi, a distinctive platform where the enigmatic moai appear to gaze serenely upon the boundless sea. Adorned with seven imposing moai, local legend suggests these figures symbolize the seven intrepid explorers dispatched by Hotu Matu’a prior to his legendary colonization voyage. After Ahu Akivi, the tour heads to Ahu Huri A Urenga, a historically significant site, and then concludes at Puna Pau. Here, in the crimson-hued crater, lies the quarry for crafting the intricate Pukao—the unique ‘hats’ atop the moai. This volcanic landscape preserves the island’s ancient craftsmanship and spiritual significance, showcasing the artistry woven into these symbolic headdresses.
This afternoon, travel to Ana Kai Tangata cave, revealing intricate bird drawings representing the revered manutara (sea swallows) pivotal in the annual Bird Man competition—an enthralling island tradition. Then, explore the Vinapu sector, renowned for its precise basalt slabs akin to Inca craftsmanship in Cuzco. Then, visit Rano Kau volcano, boasting a lush lagoon with reed islands and thriving flora and microfauna. Lastly, enter the ceremonial Village of Orongo, the hallowed site where the revered Bird Man Ceremony unfolded. Here, in concert with the king, the next political and spiritual leader for the year was chosen. Carvings depicting this sacred figure—a diminutive human form with a prominent bird-like head—are etched into several rocks here.
