The Great Wilderness Journey map

Day 1: Victoria Falls After arrival in Livingstone you will be met by a representative and transferred directly for a guided tour of the Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. At 1708 metres (5604 ft) wide, it is the largest curtain of water in the world and drops 103 metres (338 ft) into the basalt depths of the sheer Zambezi Gorge.

Overnight accommodation is at the Toka Leya Camp, situated on the banks of the Zambezi River in the eastern sector of the Mosioa-Tunya National Park, some 12 kms(7.46 miles) up from the Victoria Falls. The camp consists of 12 safari-style tents, each en-suite with a view of the magnificent Zambezi River and some of its islands. The camp's dining and bar area is set beneath a shaded canopy of trees overlooking the River and a swimming pool.

Days 2 - 4: Chobe National Park & Linyanti Concession After a full breakfast depart Toka Leya and transfer by road to Livingstone Airport. On leaving Zambia, you will fly over the Kazangula border, a point where the four countries of Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia meet. Enjoy a leisurely shaded boat cruise along the Chobe River, with a light lunch. This boat cruise offers a unique opportunity to observe puku, large herds of elephant, numerous pods of hippo and large crocodiles, as well as enjoying fantastic views of other general game and diverse birdlife.

You will then depart by light aircraft transfer to the private Linyanti Concession. After a short game drive arrive at camp, which is elegantly set up under African ebony and knobthorn trees overlooking panoramic vistas of the Linyanti Swamps. The landscape of the Linyanti varies from floodplains to open dry land savannah and forest with sweeping views, creating a paradise for a high diversity of wildlife and bird species. Activities include game drives in the private northern sector of the concession, exploring a range of habitats, from riverbanks to scrub and forest, which reveal a myriad of wildlife en route to slake their thirst from the river. The seldom-seen sitatunga can also be spotted in the waterways, as well as rare roan and sable antelope, plains game and of course their predators, the lion and leopard - with the endangered wild dog as an incredible bonus.

To complete the experience, it is possible to enjoy a full-day excursion to the Savute Channel, with lunch at a scenic setting. This spectacular day gives guests a real understanding of the geology of Northern Botswana, the relationship with the Great African Rift Valley and the chink in the fault line, where the Savute Channel begins. This channel, now flowing for the first time in three decades has resulted in water reaching into the heart of Chobe National Park through the Linyanti Reserve and game viewing is both diverse and abundant.

Days 5 - 7: Santawani Concession, Okavango Delta Depart by light aircraft to Gomoti Tented Camp in the community-owned Santawani Concession of the Okavango Delta. The camp is nestled under large acacia trees in a diverse and game-rich area. Most of the concession is comprised of a mixed woodland habitat and open grasslands that are transformed into floodplains in years of plentiful water.

The main area includes a thatched dining room where guests will enjoy freshly prepared meals as well as a cosy lounge. The camp accommodates a maximum of eight guests in five spacious and comfortable canvas tents. Designed to recreate the style of the early explorers, the tents feature richly-coloured teak director chairs and comfortable interiors. Separate bedside tables with 12-volt reading lamps, wooden-framed wardrobes, comfortable twin beds and mirrors are provided. Each tent has a private en-suite toilet and shower.

Interpretive day and night drives and guided bush walks are led by experienced Explorations guides, where guests are likely to view a multitude of grazing animals in the fertile and grassy surrounds. Wildlife is plentiful with regular sightings of leopard, lion, wild dog, cheetah, giraffe and elephant. Guests can also choose to relax and take in the views from under the shade of their veranda. In the evenings, paraffin hurricane lanterns and a crackling campfire set the ambiance.

Days 8 - 10: Xigera Concession, Moremi Game Reserve, Okavango Delta After breakfast transfer by light aircraft over the shimmering water world of the Okavango Delta to Xigera. The 6 000-hectare (15 000-acre) Xigera Concession is a wetland paradise within Moremi Game Reserve in the heart of the Delta. Situated on one of the Okavango's key waterways, it is surrounded by picturesque papyrus swamps and wooded islands and is renowned for the highest density of the elusive sitatunga antelope in the Delta. Although the area is not known for big game, mammal sightings include red lechwe, spotted-necked otter, elephant and tsessebe. Predators include lion, spotted hyaena and leopard. Guests are sometimes treated to close-up views of lion or leopard using the footbridge connecting Xigera's island to the next! This concession is a delight for birdwatchers, many of the key swamp-dwelling specialists being resident. Notable are Pel's Fishing-Owl, African Skimmer, Brown Firefinch, Greater Swamp Warbler, Wattled Crane, African Pygmy Goose and Lesser Jacana.

Nestled in a magnificent riverine forest, Xigera Camp embodies the essence of the Okavango Delta. The camp is found on the aptly-named 'Paradise Island', surrounded by almost year-round water and lush vegetation. We invite you to stay in one of the nine beautifully furnished, en-suite tented rooms offering views over a seasonal floodplain and small lagoon. You will enjoy meals and drinks in the lounge and dining area overlooking the flowing channel or under the stars in our traditional African boma. During long lazy afternoons, take a plunge in the pool or soak up the sun on a lounger. Surrounded by spectacular wilderness, Xigera Camp will give you a feeling of wellbeing far from the hubbub of modern living.
