Panache is a stylish 12 passenger hotel barge, with spacious public areas and six comfortable double or twin en suite cabins. All the bathrooms have twin handbasins and oversized showers. There are panoramic windows in the saloon and the hotel barge has been fitted out in traditional yacht style with brass and mahogany fittings. A large sun deck and spa pool, plus 12 bicycles for guests' use to explore the towpath complete the picture.
Panache's highly professional crew of six is comprised of Master Chef, Deck Hand/Steward, Tour guide and two Housekeepers, led by a knowledgeable and experienced Captain who will ensure your cruise is memorable and more. Their knowledge of the region, combined with fascinating chauffeur driven private excursions and the 12 bikes we provide will allow you to explore the areas you cruise through in as much detail as you desire.
Day 1: Strasbourg You will be transferred to Panache, moored by the Parc de L'Etoile, for a Champagne welcome and the first opportunity to meet your crew. There is time for a walk or cycle ride before dinner on board.
Day 2: Strasbourg to Brumath Forest This morning we cruise into the stunning Brumath Forest with walking and cycling opportunities. After lunch we drive to Strasbourg and enjoy a tour of the city, including of course, a visit to the 12th century Gothic pink sandstone cathedral, home to an astronomical Renaissance clock and a soaring spire. Then visit Place Gutenberg and explore La Petite France, a pedestrian area brimming with half-timbered houses, boutique shops and cafes. Later enjoy a tour with a private wine and kouglof tasting at the Cave Historique des Hospices de Strasbourg, which dates from 1394 and still stores a barrel of wine from 1472 that was last tasted by De Gaulle's liberating French army in 1944. Alternatively, visit the chocolate museum 15 minutes' drive from Strasbourg. The whole family can find out all about the world of chocolate. Dinner on board.
Day 3: Brumath Forest > Hochfelden This morning cruise to Hochfelden. After lunch enjoy a tour of the village of Wingersheim and visit the Alsace hops region situated between the Vosges Mountains and the Black Forest. The climate is continental with hot summers that perfectly suit the hops plants. From a view point above the village, we hear about growing hops and the history of the hops culture, before a tour and tasting of locally brewed beer at the Holtzmann Brewery. On the way back we stop for a Tarte Flambee and beer at a typical Hansel and Gretel style Alsatian inn. If your family prefer an alternative to the wine tasting, take a visit to "Saint-Croix Animal Park", nestled in 100 hectares of parkland with over 100 different species of animals. Return to the barge for dinner on board.
Day 4: Hochfelden > Saverne After breakfast, we relax and enjoy our cruise to Saverne and moor at the foot of the 18th century neoclassical Château de Rohan, also known as the Versailles of Alsace with its red sandstone facade. After lunch drive to the troglodyte houses in the Vosges National Park followed by a visit to the mountaintop village of La Petite Pierre, with its medieval castle, fortified by the personal architect of Louis XIV, Sebastien Le Prestre de Vauban. We then tour the outstanding Rene Lalique collection and see over 500 exceptional examples of Art Nouveau and Art Deco glassware. In nearby Wingen-sur-Moder is also the World War II battleground where in 1945 American infantry confronted some of Germany's most seasoned veterans. Dinner on board.
Day 5: Saverne > Lutzelbourg After breakfast, we enjoy a walking tour of Saverne, including a visit to its local market. After lunch we visit the 'Luge Alpine Coaster' - a fantastic 500m toboggan ride, on fixed rails through the countryside. Return to the Panache for a cruise to Lutzelbourg followed by a game of petanque and a bicycle ride, before dinner on board.
Day 6 Lutzelbourg > Niderviller Start the day with a visit to a local bakery to watch skilled patissiers preparing their delicious creations. Then visit the Fusion Libre artistic glass blowers workshop before ascending the unique Arzviller boat elevator that carries Panache effortlessly 450 feet up the mountainside in minutes, thus avoiding 17 traditional locks and an additional day's navigation. Enjoy a candlelit lunch on board whilst passing through the two Arzviller tunnels. On arrival in Niderviller your family then have a choice. Either tour the interesting town of Sarrebourg, including visits to the 13th century chapel containing the remarkable stained-glass window designed by Marc Chagall, or fun at Centre Aquatique. This includes the 60m "Canon Slide", an outside swimming pool, spa pool and lazy river. Return to Panache for Captain's Farewell Dinner on board.
Day 7: Niderviller Disembark after breakfast and transfer to the drop off point.
