Winterlake Lodge offers seclusion, relaxation, luxury and spectacular scenery. Located along Alaska's historic Iditarod Trial, this Alaska wilderness lodge features amazing cuisine, culinary classes and many "Within the Wild" Alaska adventures.
Tutka Bay Lodge sits amidst rugged coastlines, deep fjords, dramatic mountains, quiet beaches, and old growth Sitka spruce forests. Situated on a ten acre property with a main lodge, six private guest accommodations, a sauna, hot tub, and boat house - all connected by a boardwalk, it is the perfect place for an exclusive Alaska experience.
Day 1: Anchorage > Winterlake Lodge Transfer from your hotel to Lake Hood, the world's largest floatplane lake. Board your floatplane for a scenic 50-minute flight to Winterlake Lodge. The flight takes you north and west "“ within views of Mt. McKinley. Land on Finger Lake, the location of an Iditarod. Checkpoint and check in to your cabin. Join your hosts at the main Lodge for a brief orientation to the activities and facilities at the lodge, then plan your days with your guides.
Options include: guided narrated walks, hiking, canoeing and kayaking; watching wild birds; berry picking; cooking classes (offered daily); wine and cheese tastings; yoga and stretch classes, one complimentary massage, soaking in the hut tub or swimming in the lake. (Lunch & dinner included today)
Day 2: Winter Lake Lodge After breakfast met your helicopter pilot and guide for a day-long adventure outing via our Robinson R-44 helicopter to Canyon Creek for fly fishing or explore the Tordrillo Mountain area for glacier trekking and hiking. In the afternoon you may enjoy lunch in the outdoors or back at the lodge, then after lunch you may choose to hike to the top of Wolverine Ridge where the view of Mt. Denali is spectacular. Day 3: Winter Lake Lodge > Tutka Bay Lodge This morning board a float plane to travel to Tutka Bay Lodge. It's a scenic 70-minute flight along the Kenai coast. Check in with your hosts at the main Lodge for a brief orientation to the activities and facilities at the lodge, and then plan your day with your guide. Guided activities include: Sea kayaking, local sport fishing, beach combing and tidal-pool exploration, coastal touring by boat, nature trail hiking through old growth forests, hiking in the Kachemak Bay State Park Trail System, birding and wildlife viewing. Use of sauna and hot tub, morning yoga classes, one complimentary massage, cooking classes and wine tasting. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included today)
Day 4: Tutka Bay Lodge - Bear Viewing or Deep Sea Fishing Excursion Today you can choose from either a Deep Sea Fishing Excursion in search of saltwater fish such as halibut, cod and salmon or a Bear Viewing Excursion into the famed Katmai area. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner included today)
Day 5: Tutka Bay Lodge > Anchorage (Floatplane) After breakfast, catch the water taxi back to Homer and Ravn Alaska jet flight back to Anchorage. (Breakfast included today)
Tutka Bay Lodge Information The lodge is located in Kachemak Bay, near Homer on the Kenai Peninsula and adjacent to Kachemak Bay State Park. Situated between Halibut Cove and Seldovia, the secluded Tutka Bay reaches seven miles into the glacier studded Kenai Mountains. These glaciers join one another to form the massive Harding Ice Field, which presses down the other side of the mountains into Kenai Fjords National Park. The Lodge buildings are situated on a narrow strip of land that is bordered on two sides by water. Extravagant decks and walkways connect each building which are placed along the edge of the land, with ample views of the water and lush wilderness. The remote Tutka Bay Wilderness Lodge offers a unique Alaskan experience for adventure travelers seeking less traveled places!
Transportation The lodge is accessible by water taxi from Homer or by float plane. The water taxiride between Homer and the lodge takes about 25 minutes.
Accommodation The lodge offers 5 spacious and charming accommodations. Each has a private bath, satellite TV, and views of the ocean, mountains and forest. From the Lodge solarium, guests can enjoy sweeping views of the islands and inlets of Little Tutka Bay, as well as the impressive Jakolof Peak.
Fine Dining Meals are included. The hearty, gourmet dinners feature Alaska seafood, including halibut, shellfish and wild run salmon. Breakfast and dinner are served family style in the Lodge solarium. Picnic lunches are packed to take on day excursions.
Activities Daily guided activities included in price are: sea kayaking, local sportfishing, beachcombing and tidal-pool exploration, coastal touring by boat, nature trail hiking through old growth forests, hiking in the Kachemak Bay State Park Trail System, birding and wildlife viewing. Deep sea salmon/ halibut fishing charters and fight seeing tours can be arranged for an additional cost. Lodge-based activities included in price are: use of sauna and hot tub on the deck, morning yoga classes, one complimentary massage only), cooking classes and wine tasting.
Winterlake Lodge Information Winterlake Lodge offers seclusion and spectacular scenery. Trimble and Hayes Glacier, as well as the entrance to Rainy Pass can all be seen from the lake. The lodge offers many opportunities for hiking and wildlife viewing with many species of Alaska birds, wildflowers, and berries that are rarely seen in other locales. The lodge is also located on the National Historic Iditarod Trail. During the race in March it serves as one of the sled dog race check points.
Lodge setting and accommodation The main lodge offers a comfortable main room for relaxing by the fire and viewing the lake from large picture windows. There is a cozy dining area and large kitchen for the preparation of the lodge's signature gourmet cuisine. Facilities also include a large meditation yoga room, hot tub on the main deck, and a lakeside woodburning sauna. These are the sites of a wellness program that includes massage therapy. There are 5 guest cabins on the property, each with private bath, including a family cabin with 3 sleeping rooms.
Fine Dining Lodge owner and renowned chef Kirsten Dixon offers world-class culinary classes at the lodge with visiting chefs and specialized culinary programs throughout the year. Gourmet meals are serviced from a daily menu. In keeping with tradition, Alaska regional cuisine is featured. You are welcome to come into the kitchen at any time and help cook if you like! Special dishes may be made on request. The lodge also offers frequent lakeside barbecues of Alaska salmon and King Crab.
Activities Included A daily activity sheet is posted in each cabin and a daily menu of meals is posted in the main lodge. Daily activities may include a cooking class; an interesting 1.5 hour narrated walk with your guide; a tour of the lake by canoe; kayaking; mountain biking; berry picking; following the tracks of wolves, otters and moose (in the winter); and dog mushing (with a wheel sled in the summer) on the National Historic Iditarod Trail. The main lodge also has a library for a day of quiet relaxation as well as yoga classes, a staff masseuse and outdoor hot spa. One 60-minute massage is also included.
