Walk through rural Japan on the Nakasendo Trail, a route used since the feudal times linking Kyoto and Tokyo through the central mountains of Japan. On this unforgettable journey, you will experience wonderful scenery, beautiful guesthouse lodging, amazing food, and the rich tradition and culture of the Land of the Rising Sun! You'll also stay over in Kyoto, Matsumoto and Tokyo to complete your Japanese experience.

Day 1: Kyoto On arrival at Kansai Airport you will be met and transferred to your hotel by shared shuttle.

Day 2: Kyoto Join a scheduled coach tour of Kyoto and the former capital of Nara. See some of the area's most famous temples and shrines as well as the deer in Nara Park.

Day 3: Kyoto Enjoy a full day at leisure to explore Kyoto independently.

Day 4: Kyoto > Magome > Tsumago Travel by train to Nagoya, where your private guide for the day will meet you on the platform. Together, travel by train and bus to Magome, where you begin your walk on the Nakasendo Trail to Tsumago (8 kms). Farewell your guide on arrival in Tsumago, where you will have your first of three nights in one of the local traditional inns along the Nakasendo.

Day 5: Tsumago > Nojiri > Kiso Fukushima Today you have the option of a longer walk (18 kms) from Tsumago to Nojiri through bamboo and cedar forests, or a shorter walk of about an hour to Nagiso where you can catch a train to Nojiri. From Nojiri, travel by train to Kiso Fukushima for the night.

Day 6: Kiso Fukushima > Yabuhara > Narai Travel from Kiso Fukushima to Yabuhara by local train, then begin today's walk over the Torii-toge pass to Narai (6 kms). Take some time to explore Narai, once the wealthiest post town in the area.

Day 7: Narai > Kiso Hirasawa > Matsumoto This morning is a short walk (2.5 kms) to Kiso Hirasawa, a village well-known for its lacquer bowls and dishes. Travel by train to Matsumoto, where you will have free time to explore the city. Don't miss Matsumoto Castle and the well-preserved buildings of Nakamachi-dori.

Day 8: Matsumoto > Tokyo Travel by train to Tokyo. This evening, join a shared walking tour of the Shinjuku Golden Gai neighbourhood, including a stop at an izakaya bar for an included drink.

Day 9: Tokyo This morning join a shared half day tour of Tokyo, visiting the Tokyo Tower, the Meiji Shrine, and the Imperial Palace Gardens, and finishing with a drive through Ginza. Enjoy your afternoon at leisure to explore Tokyo on your own.

Day 10: Tokyo Transfer by regular scheduled airport bus to the airport.

Booking conditions

Accommodation while on the Nakasendo is in local family-run minshuku or ryokan. They are generally simply furnished and less formal, but have excellent food and wonderful personalised service. Rooms here will have shared (communal) facilities and are not en-suite. Please contact us for suggestions of how we can change the itinerary to include upgraded accommodation.
