Okavango & Kalahari Contrasts
• The Kalahari Desert • Okavango Delta
Northern Botswana is all about contrasting ecosystems and their scenery, activities, fauna and flora. This itinerary allows you to experience two of the best extremes of the natural world; the arid Kalahari and the lush Okavango Delta. Kalahari Plains Camp is the perfect location to explore the remoteness of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. You will be awestruck as you learn how animals survive in this harsh landscape. After Kalahari Plains, head to Banoka Bush Camp where you will be able to contrast this experience with the oasis that is the Okavango Delta.
Day 1: Maun > Kalahari Desert On arrival in Maun, Botswana transfer via light aircraft to Kalahari Plains Camp for three nights. This flight will give you a bird's-eye view of the enormous 52,800 km2 Central Kalahari Game Reserve, larger than Switzerland and one of the biggest game reserves in the world.
Kalahari Plains Camp is situated overlooking a pan with endless horizons and beautiful skies, in the remote northern part of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. The camp consists of 10 en-suite canvas units (including two family rooms) each with a rooftop sleep-out deck from which to enjoy the star-studded nights. The tents, main area and pool are all raised off the ground to catch the breeze and take in the spacious views across the plain. Kalahari Plains is a 100% solar-powered camp, and uses innovative insulated canvas walls and roofs to keep temperatures naturally comfortable. One can see seasonal herds of herbivores, springbok, gemsbok, steenbok and red hartebeest as well as a variety of predators including lion, cheetah, bat-eared fox, brown hyena, jackal, and caracal. There are also some 220 bird species to be seen. Activities include game drives, trips to the renowned Deception Valley with a picnic brunch, and interpretive walk with staff members who are from the local San Bushman clan.
Upon arrival at Kalahari Plains Camp, there will be a welcome drink and camp orientation. Your guide will advise and discuss with you the activities available to ensure you enjoy and experience everything the area has to offer. Afternoon activity followed by dinner.
Days 2 & 3: Kalahari Enjoy twice daily activities including safaris looking for diverse, desert-adapted wildlife like springbok, oryx, red hartebeest and steenbok. There is an abundance of predators as well; lion, cheetah, black-backed jackal and honey badger. Another highlight is an authentic Bushman experience.
Day 4: Kalahari > Okavango Delta Fly from Kalahari Plains Camp to Jacana Camp in the Okavango Delta. Flying shows Botswana's scenic contrasts; delta and desert; water and sand; verdant, thick bush and expansive wide-open spaces.
Located on a beautiful island in the Jao Concession on the Moremi Game Reserve, Jacana Camp is a typical Delta camp. Surrounded by seasonally-inundated floodplains and papyrus swamps, Jacana Camp has five en-suite Meru-style tents, including a family tent, built on raised wooden decks to facilitate its panoramic views of the Okavango Delta. The main dining area is on an elevated platform between two magnificent sycamore fig trees and surrounded by dense wild date palms. Jacana Camp also has a cosy lounge with an area for an open fire under the stars; and a plunge pool for cooling off in the midday sun.
Activities include game drives, guided walks in the bush, a mokoro experience, and a cultural visit to a nearby village bordering the private concession. Afternoon drives are followed by a night drive before coming back to camp for dinner.
Days 5 > 6: Okavango Delta Enjoy twice daily activities including savannah and wetland wildlife: elephant, hippo, buffalo, lechwe, impala, plains zebra and giraffe, predator sightings: lion, spotted hyena and leopard, game drives, mokoro trips, nature walks & visits to African village and cultural experience .
