The Dalton Highway is Alaska's lifeline to the Arctic. Your journey takes you north through the sub-arctic region, crossing the Arctic Circle and visiting the tiny settlement of Coldfoot. The Gates of the Arctic National Park, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Brooks Range and North Slope are all accessed along your route.

Day 1: Fairbanks > Coldfoot (10 Passenger Van) This morning you will depart Fairbanks for your journey to the Arctic Ocean. Traveling with a driver-guide you will visit the Arctic Circle Trading Post in the rural community of Joy. Travel along the rugged Dalton Highway north and experience the mighty Yukon River. Marvel at the majestic beauty of the Northland's most famous waterway and learn about its storied past. You will cross the Arctic Circle on your way to your destination of Coldfoot.

This evening take an optional sightseeing tour (not included) • Koyukuk River Scenic Float - Enjoy a quiet float down the Middle Fork Koyukuk River and enjoy the wilderness around you. Or • Anaktuvuk Pass Adventure - Enjoy a flight through the Brooks Mountain Range to Anaktuvuk Pass, a Nunamiut Eskimo Village surrounded by the Gates of the Arctic National Park.

Overnight Coldfoot Camp

Day 2: Coldfoot > Prudhoe Bay (10 Passenger Van) Today you will continue north climbing over the Continental Divide at Atigun Pass. Explore the amazing Arctic tundra of the Arctic Coastal Plain and feel the veins of ice just beneath the surface. Take an optional excursion this evening (not included)

Overnight Deadhorse Camp

Day 3: Prudhoe Bay > Barrow > Fairbanks (Flight) Fly from Prudhoe Bay to the Inupiat Eskimo village of Barrow. Get a first hand glimpse of the lifestyle of Alaska's Arctic Coastal people with a tour of the village. Walk the shores of the Arctic Ocean near the northernmost point in North America. Return by air to Fairbanks (Flight may stop in Deadhorse on the return flight). The flight between Prudhoe Bay and Fairbanks is typically conducted in 8-passenger or 19-passenger twin-engine aircraft.

Reverse Itinerary

Day 1: Fairbanks > Barrow >Prudhoe Bay (Flight) Today, you fly north from Fairbanks to the Inupiat Eskimo village of Barrow. Get a first hand glimpse of the lifestyle of Alaska's Arctic Coastal people with a tour of the village. Walk the shores of the Arctic Ocean near the northernmost point in North America. Leaving Barrow fly to Prudhoe Bay.

Overnight Deadhorse Camp

Day 2: Prudhoe Bay > Coldfoot (10 Passenger Van) This morning, depart by ground tour south on the Dalton Highway traveling through the remote Brooks Range, farthest north mountain range in North America. Spectacluar peaks and vast lands make this one of the most unpopulated regions in the world.

This evening take an optional sightseeing tour (not included) • Koyukuk River Scenic Float - Enjoy a quiet float down the Middle Fork Koyukuk River and enjoy the wilderness around you. Or • Anaktuvuk Pass Adventure - Enjoy a flight through the Brooks Mountain Range to Anaktuvuk Pass, a Nunamiut Eskimo Village surrounded by the Gates of the Arctic National Park.

Overnight Coldfoot

Day 3: Coldfoot > Fairbanks(10 Passenger Van) In the morning you either have the opportunity to explore Coldfoot on your own, or to take part in one of the optional tours in the area (not included). The options include the Koyukuk Scenic River Float, the Arctic Mountain Safari that takes you into the Brooks Mountain Range or a visit to Wiseman with its interesting past and present. You arrive back in Coldfoot in the afternoon in time for your one hour flight back to Fairbanks between 4 and 5pm.

Please Note:

Accommodation: Overnight accommodations consist of very basic, clean rooms with two twin beds that are extremely rustic by urban standards. There are no private bathrooms in the rooms. There are private toilet and shower stalls in separate men's and women's facilities that are shared among guests.

Luggage restriction: It is very important to limit yourself to one hand-carry size bag per person for your overnight bag with a total weight of 6.5 kg / 15 lbs per person. Luggage can be stored and delivered upon your return.
