They built magnificent cities of stone and their highly developed culture was amazing. This extensive private tour visits not just the well known archaeological sites such as Uxmal, Palenque and Chichen Itza, but less visited gems, some set deep in the jungle. Day 1: Arrive Merida Transfer to your hotel on arrival.
Day 2: Merida Enjoy a walking tour of the historical centre of Merida.
Day 3: Merida > Uxmal & Kabah > Campeche Leaving Merida, today offers your first introduction to the Maya civilisation as you visit the impressive archaeological sites of Uxmal and Kabah. Then continue to the walled city of Campeche and stay in the historic colonial centre.
Day 4: Campeche > Edzna > Palenque Today you drive to Palenque and on the way visit the beautiful pyramid temple at Edzna. On arrival in Palenque check into your hotel and enjoy the wonderful hotel gardens during your two night stay.
Day 5: Lacandon Jungle & Ruins An interesting full day tour takes you to two less visited archaeological gems set in the jungle. Travel by road and boat to arrive at remote Yachxilan then continue to Bonampak which is famous for its extraordinarily beautiful painted murals dating from Mayan times. Birdlife and monkeys are also commonly seen during today. Return to Palenque late afternoon.
Day 6: Palenque > Calakmul The morning is spent taking an extensive tour of amazing Palenque, perhaps the most beautiful pre-Hispanic site in Mexico where you can marvel at the beautiful temples and palaces. The afternoon is spent driving to Calakmul.
Day 7: Calakmul > Chicanna > Bacalar Enter the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve and travel some 2 hours by road deep into the jungle visiting the immense temples of Calakmul. The drive is well worth it as you explore and climb the temples for a view across the forest - all the while hearing the call of Howler Monkeys in the trees. Later make a visit to Chicanna, another Mayan site noted for its marvelous stucco work. Overnight at a charming hotel on the shores of Bacalar Lagoon.
Day 8: Bacalar > Valladolid > Chichen Itza Driving towards Chichen Itza for your overnight hacienda stay. On the way explore the charming and picturesque colonial town of Valladolid.
Day 9: Chichen Itza > Cancun or Mexican Caribbean Visit the famous ruins of Chichen Itza for an in-depth tour. In the afternoon you will transfer to Cancun Airport or if you prefer, to one of the hotels on the coast.
