This trip combines a visit to the historic town of Colonia del Sacramento, a stop in the capital city of Montevideo and a boutique winery stay. European immigrants introduced many varieties of cheese and wine to Uruguay, leaving the country with a legacy of vineyards, wineries, artisan cheese producers and olive oil plantations. Discover both the touristic and culinary highlights of Uruguay, and be prepared to be very pleasantly surprised by this 'under the radar' destination.

Day 1: Colonia del Sacramento On arrival in Colonia de Sacramento you will be transferred to your boutique hotel. Take an afternoon walking tour along the cobbled streets of the UNESCO World Heritage listed 'old town'. Visit the highlights of this charming settlement including the Spanish and Portuguese Museums, followed by a traditional mate (tea) tasting.

Day 2: Colonia del Sacramento > Carmelo Visit La Calera de las Huerfanas, the Jesuit Ruins where the Uruguayan history of wine began, and then continue to one of the oldest vineyards in Uruguay, Almacen de la Capilla - Bodega Cordano. Enjoy wine tasting tour and then it's on to the boutique winery of El Legado to experience a typical Uruguayan asado (BBQ) lunch. Transfer to Carmelo and check in to the delightful Finca Narbona Wine Lodge where you will spend the next two nights.

Day 3: Carmelo Morning at leisure, followed by a picnic lunch in the vineyards. This afternoon take part in a wine and cheese tasting in the cellar, guided by the winemaker at your lodge, then enjoy a relaxed sunset boat ride through the islands of the delta, where the waters of Rio de la Plata and Rio Uruguay meet.

Day 4: Carmelo > Montevideo Transfer to the capital city of Montevideo and on arrival enjoy a walking tour of the city. Beginning in Independence Square, this tour takes you through the historic old town, visiting Constitution Square, the Cathedral, the Museum of Pre-Columbian Art and the Carnival Museum. Enjoy a fantastic lunch at the lively port side market and then continue on to the new city, filled with wide tree-lined streets and home to many high-end stores and residences. View the Palacio Legislativo (Congress) and visit the Museum of the Gaucho.

Day 5: Montevideo > Rocha Depart Montevideo today and head towards Rocha, a region rich in olive oil production, to enjoy a guided tour of a local olive oil plant. Then visit Vina Eden Winery for a wine tasting and tour. Spend the next two nights on a working estancia.

Day 6: Rocha > Cabo Polonia > Rocha Take an excursion to the small coastal village of Barra de Valizas and hike the coastline enjoying gorgeous ocean views from Buena Vista Hill. After lunch at a local seaside restaurant, travel by 4x4 vehicle to a nearby lighthouse and one of the largest sea lion reserves in South America.

Day 7: Rocha > Jose Ignacio Visit the superb Bodega Garzon, well-known producer of top quality wines. Enjoy tastings and a gourmet lunch here along with a tour of the winery, then visit nearby Pueblo Garzon, a small town where time seems to have stood still, before continuing to Jose Ignacio.

Day 8: Jose Ignacio > Punta del Este > Jose Ignacio Today you will visit the chic beachside resort town of Punta del Este, which sits on a narrow strip of land bordered on one side by the iconic Playa Brava, home to the famous 'La Mano' sculpture, which depicts five human fingers partially emerging from the sand. This quaint town is very popular in the summer with the locals and has many lovely galleries and excellent restaurants. This evening you will participate in a cooking class at the home of a local chef to enjoy a range of traditional Uruguay and South American specialties.

Day 9: Jose Ignacio > Montevideo After breakfast transfer back to Montevideo Airport in time for your onward flight.
