Experience the northern lights in the outermost regions of Finland and Norway - Saariselka to Tromso including an expedition to the North Cape Plateau. This tour will give you the best chances of hunting the northern lights in many different locations and environments. Along the way you also have the opportunity to try a variety of winter activities: husky dog sledding, reindeer safari, overnighting in a snow hotel, snowmobiling and much more.
Day 1: Helsinki Upon arrival in Helsinki, make your own way to your hotel. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure before meeting your tour leader and fellow travelers at the hotel for a welcome drink.
Day 2: Helsinki Discover Helsinki, the capital of Finland on a 3 hour city tour. Your local guide will show you the most famous sights such as the Senate Square with the Helsinki Cathedral, the market square, the Orthodox Uspenski Cathedral, the Olympic Stadium and the Parliament. See the Sibelius monument, one of Helsinki's most famous statues and dedicated to the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. Lastly visit the unique Temppeliaukio Church, also known as the "Church in the Rock". Afternoon and evening at leisure.
Day 3: Helsinki > Kemi This morning walk across the street to Helsinki Central Station and board your northbound train towards Kemi. Journey through magical landscapes with endless snow-covered forests and lakes covered with ice. Arrive in Kemi late afternoon and transfer to your hotel in Kemi. Enjoy dinner at the hotel and spend the night in a glass villa with a view of the starry northern sky.
Day 4: Kemi > Rovaniemi > Saariselka Morning at leisure in Kemi, with the opportunity to take an optional snowmobile safari, husky safari or one of the many other exciting excursions offered. In the afternoon, transfer to the port of Kemi and board the majestic Arctic Icebreaker Sampo vessel that will take you on a truly unique cruise, crushing through the thick ice on the Gulf of Bothnia. Travelling further north through Finnish Lapland and towards the Arctic Circle, enjoy dinner at a local restaurant in Rovaniemi before continuing to Saariselka and the Northern Lights Village.
Day 5: Saariselka Today you will enjoy a husky safari through the snowy forests and fells. Driving a team of huskies over the white, shimmering fells is an experience you will never forget. In the evening you will visit an aurora camp by one of the local lakes. Here you warm up in a cosy hut by the fire, enjoy a warm drink and prepare a traditional Lapland midnight snack. If lucky and the sky is clear, experience the fascinating northern lights.
Day 6: Saariselka > Inari > Karasjok Morning departure by private coach, via Inari, where a stop and entrance to the Siida Sami Museum is included. Continue northwest and later cross the border to Norway. Shortly afterwards arrive at Karasjok, the Sami capital and home of the Sami Parliament of Norway, "Samediggi". Overnight and dinner in Karasjok.
Day 7: Karasjok > Honningsvag > North Cape Early morning departure as you continue north, bound for the North Cape. Travel through the North Cape tunnel until you reach Mageroya Island, on which the North Cape is situated. The North Cape cliff itself will be visited today (subject to weather conditions). Arrive in Honningsvag and enjoy dinner before your overnight in the northernmost city in Norway.
Day 8: Honningsvag > Alta Today head south and travel back along the Porsanger fjord, bound for Alta, "the northern lights city of Norway". In the afternoon, visit the Alta Museum to see the expositions about the local history of the northern lights. The remainder of the afternoon and evening is free. Why not try your luck and join a local northern lights safari in and around Alta? In Alta you also have the chance to upgrade and experience an overnight stay in the Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel (supplement applies).
Day 9: Alta > Tromso Today, drive along the arctic fjords bound for Tromso, former starting point of many North Pole expeditions. Free time before evening northern lights safari, where a light dinner will be included.
Day 10: Tromso Day at leisure in Tromso, where you have the opportunity to take an optional snowmobile safari, husky safari or many more exciting excursions.
Day 11: Depart Tromso Arrangements end after check-out.
