Iceland's Spectacular West Self-Drive
• The Blue Lagoon • Breidafjordur Bay • Westfjords
Get the total Icelandic experience in a completely different way on this self-drive tour of one of Iceland's most enchanting and lesser known regions. West Iceland contains everything that makes Iceland so unique in one area, yet is surprisingly close to Reykjavik. You'll also get to know the mysterious Westfjords, home to some of Iceland's most spectacular scenery and wildlife. Spend the week discovering the country's Viking history, natural hot springs, glacier capped volcanoes, gorgeous waterfalls, lava caves and majestic fjords.
Day 1: Reykjavik > Hveragerdi Collect your rental car and start your journey. Your first stop may be the Blue Lagoon, or simply drive along the southern coast of the Reykjanes Peninsula to the charming village of Hveragerdi for your overnight.
Day 2: Hveragerdi > Stykkisholmur Travel along the western coast towards the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, perhaps stopping off at the perfectly formed Eldborg crater to peer into its depths. There is an extraordinary variety of natural wonders along the peninsula to discover, from the rich birdlife at Arnarstapi sea cliffs to pleasant hiking along the shiny pebble beach at Djupalonssandur. End your Day in Stykkisholmur, a charming eco-friendly town with beautiful wooden buildings.
Day 3: Stykkisholmur > Patreksfjordur Travel by ferry across Breidafjordur Bay, home to more than 3,000 tiny islands inhabited by nesting seabirds and playful seals. Drive along the southern coast of the Westfjords, stopping to see the sand change colours at the gorgeous long beach of Raudasandur. Continue to the 441 metre high Latrabarg cliffs, where you will find millions of fearless birds including puffins, guillemots and razorbills. Overnight in the Patreksfjordur area.
Day 4: Patreksfjordur > Isafjordur Travel across the spectacular Westfjords, keeping an eye out for thermal bathing springs hidden among the rugged heaths. Stop in at the curious Sea Monster Museum in Bildudalar, pass through tiny villages and admire the mighty waterfall Dynjandi. End the Day in Isafjordur, the largest town in the area and the honourary capital of the Westfjords.
Day 5: Isafjordur > Laugar in Saelingsdalur Drive the numerous uninhabited inlets of Isafjardardjup Fjord, with its beautiful coastline teeming with seals and bird life. Optional stops include the Arctic Fox Centre in Sudavik, the remote and desolate wilderness of the Strandir coast, and the Museum of Sorcery and Witchcraft in Holmavik. End your Day in the fertile green valleys of Laugar in Saelingsdalur, an area rich in ancient Sagas and tales of elves.

This is also a great area to discover handicrafts, tasty farm-fresh treats and local microbrews.
