The "El Transcantabrico" route starts in Santiago de Compostela, a magnificent city in the northwest corner of Spain and takes you on an eight day luxury train trip to the town of Leon. The journey will take you 1000 kilometres along the Cantabric coast from Galicia to the Basque country through steep cliffs, mountains, sandy beaches and extensive wetlands. The route passes by the small fishing towns of Ribadeo and Cudillero, Oviedo, Gijon, Picos da Europa National Park, Covadonga Sanctuary, Llanes, the canyon of La Hermida, Santo Toribio de Liebana, Santillana del Mar, Altamira Caves, Santander, Laredo with a ferry excursion to Santona, and Bilbao with the famous Guggenheim museum designed by Frank Gehry.

The El Transcantabrico accommodates just 48 guests and runs on a narrow gauge railway with only 3 feet between rails. Four of the ten carriages are saloon cars featuring a bar and dining room. The suites have a double bed, wardrobe, writing desk, telephone and private bathroom.

Breakfast is served on the train while you pass the valleys, fjords, natural parks, bridges and fishing towns of the northern Spain coast and countryside. Lunch and dinner are taken at local restaurants served with a selection of wines. The train does not travel at night, ensuring a peaceful sleep.

Day 1: Santiago > Ferrol > Viveiro Lunchtime reception and sightseeing in Santiago before the trip by coach to Ferrol. Board the train to the walled city of Viveiro.

Day 2: Viveiro > Luarca The train arrives in Ribedeo on the border between Asturias and Galicia, continuing after lunch to Luarca, the White Village on the Green Coast.

Day 3: Luarca > Candas Travel by coach from Luarca to Aviles, and then to Gijon. In the afternoon head to Oviedo for sightseeing and free time. Continue to Candas.

Day 4: Candas > Llanes Arrive early in Arriondas. Travel by coach to Picos de Europa National Park, visiting Lake Enol, the Sanctuary of Covadonga and the Cangas de Onis. After lunch, the train follows the River Sella to Ribadesella and then to Llanes, a quaint fishing village.

Day 5: Llanes > Santander Continue by train to Cabezon de la Sal and visit Altamira and Santillana del Mar. We travel to Santander after lunch, for sightseeing before dinner.

Day 6: Santander > Bilbao > Espinosa de Los Monteros Enjoy a city tour and visit the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. lunch on board, overnight in Espinosa de Los Monteros

Day 7: Espinosa de Los Monteros > Cistierna In the morning travel to Mataporquera and visit the Canal de Castilla and some examples of the Palentine Romanesque art: Carrion de los Condes , Fromista and Villacazar de Sirga. After lunch in Villalcazar the train continues to Cistierna. Dinner and overnight in Cistierna.

Day 8: Cistierna > Leon Travel across the pretty rivers and valleys of the mountains of Leon to the provincial capital, Leon where the journeys ends with a tour of the city.
