Introduction
The Okavango Delta is one of the worlds’ truly unique natural wonders.
Spend four days exploring the wildlife-rich labyrinth of lagoons, waterways and islands with expert safari guides on foot, by mokoro (dug-out local canoes) and 4×4 safari vehicles. There are over 550 bird species, crocodiles, hippo and a high percentage of predators namely lion, leopard and cheetah. A winning combination of pristine wilderness and prolific wildlife!
Itinerary
Day 1 : Maun > Okavango Delta
Personal ‘meet and greet’ and light aircraft transfer flight to your lodge in the Delta, the rest of the evening is at leisure.
Located in northern Botswana, the Okavango River is a unique natural phenomenon – flowing more than 1,000 km from its source in Angola, this river disappears beneath the sands of Botswana, creating a lush inland delta in the midst of this otherwise arid country. The Okavango Delta is in a constant state of flux, expanding and contracting according to the rainy season. While some parts of the Delta remain permanently flooded, others are only deluged during the rainy season from May to September.
Covering approximately one third of the Delta, permanent swamp areas are lush and green, with groves of wild date palm, papyrus and water lilies growing around deep lagoons lined with riverine forest. Seasonal swamps, on the other hand, contain a network of small channels cutting their way through papyrus and reed beds to create islands of all shapes and sizes. As the floodwaters recede, the islands grow large until, eventually, water only remains in depressions in the landscape, which turns into open grassland.
Spend two nights at Jacana Camp with all meals and scheduled safari activities. Jacana Camp lies on a beautiful island that is surrounded by water for most of the year, making it a true camp of the central Delta. The dining area lies on an elevated wooden deck between two enormous sycamore fig trees, surrounded by dense wild date palms. Downstairs, there is a cosy lounge under thatch with a large deck, an open fire under the stars, and a plunge pool. Meals are often enjoyed outdoors under the stars.
Day 2 : Okavango Delta
Spend the day enjoying the scheduled safari activities including game drives in open 4×4 vehicles, mokoro trips, guided walks, boating and birdwatching.
Whether from boat or mokoro, or simply looking out from your deck, wildlife at home in (or drawn to) the blue waters is evident: herds of red lechwe, hippo, crocodile and spotted-necked otter are the obvious inhabitants, followed by elephant wallowing in the shallows and, if you’re lucky, elusive sitatunga or predators like lion and leopard. True Okavango bird specials include Pel’s fishing-owl and the endangered wattled crane.
Day 3 : Okavango Delta
After breakfast, you will fly to your next camp for the second two nights. Family-friendly Seba Camp overlooks a perennial lagoon with prolific birdlife and resident pods of hippos. Each tent celebrates the different ethnic groups of Botswana through vibrant decor while the main area including the dining area, bar, and lounge library is set on a raised saligna deck with floodplain views.
Day 4 : Okavango Delta
Spend the day enjoying the scheduled safari activities including game drives in open 4×4 vehicles, mokoro trips, guided walks, boating and birdwatching.
The large elephant population aside, a growing abundance of game graces the area: giraffe, zebra, impala, wildebeest, tsessebe and lechwe. lion, leopard and hyena are regularly found nearby, herds of buffalo are occasional visitors, and there are excellent opportunities to see the rare roan antelope.
Day 5 : Okavango Delta > Maun
After breakfast you will be transferred for your light aircraft flight transfer to Maun.
