Gabon, a little known African country, is a natural paradise with 88% of natural forest and under 2 million people. With jewels like the Loango National Park, where there is almost no human intervention and the wildlife is protected by the rivers surrounding it, you can easily spot large mammals such as the forest elephant, western lowland gorillas, red forest buffalo, red river hogs, sitatunga, duikers, a variety of monkeys, chimpanzees and a huge array of birdlife.
Day 1: Libreville Arrival in Libreville and transfer to your hotel for the first night and briefing with your guide.
Day 2: Libreville > Lope City tour of Libreville before lunch. Afternoon train to Lope arriving just after midnight.
Days 3 & 4: Lope National Park Visit Lope National Park with its incredible landscape - a virtual mosaic of savannas, forests and mountains. Look for forest elephants, buffalo, mandrills, black colobus satanas and endemic birdlife.
Day 5: Lope National Park Another visit to the National Park for more wildlife viewing. Night transfer to the train station for the Ndjole train.
Day 6: Ndjole > Lambarne Very early morning arrival in Ndjole and continue by road to the colonial town of Lambarené, a river island town famous for its many natural lakes. Here we also visit the unique hospital established in 1913 by German Doctor Albert Schweitzer. Its Medical Research Unit is one of the leading scientific institutions in Africa working to end the scourge of malaria, and served as a highly-regarded training site for African physicians and scientists.
Day 7: Lambarene > Ogooue River > Omboue > Loango Boat to Omboué town along the Ogooué River. You'll get the feeling of how the first explorers felt navigating along the Africa tropical rivers. Drive to Iguela Lagoon, in the Loango National Park.
Day 8: Loango National Park Exploration of the park by boat and on foot. The eco-system at Loango - a medley of landscapes with breathtaking vegetation and wildlife. We will visit the habituated Gorillas project of Loango and continue to the Akaka River looking for wildlife.
Day 9: Loango National Park Exploration in Akaka and the Iguela Lagoon. Late afternoon boat trip looking for hippos, monkeys and birds. Night boat safari for nocturnal marine life.
Day 10: Loango > Port Gentil > Libreville Departure to Port Gentil by road. From Port Gentil it is a short flight to Libreville.
