Introduction
This seven night cruise is sure to satisfy curious minds! Experience wildlife viewing while enjoying a yacht cruise along the West Africa Coast and upstream on the Gambia River, deep inside the African continent.
Cruising with Variety Cruises, discover the waterways of Senegal and Gambia with visits to no fewer than four Natural Reserves. The onboard Gambian River Naturalist will assist in discovering the amazing flora and fauna and will be your side throughout this exciting voyage, unraveling the wonders of West Africa.
Highlights include: The Sine Saloun Delta, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a birdwatcher’s paradise, Djiffere fishing village; River Gambia National Park, Wassu mysterious stone circles, another UNESCO World Heritage site, Bao Bolong Wetland Reserve and Kiang West National Park in Gambia.
Your ships:
During the day, life on board centres around the lounge and bar. The interior lounge has relaxing couches and comfortable lounge chairs where you can have a drink and gaze out of the large windows into the breath-taking sceneries you are cruising to, relax and read a book, watch television on the satellite TV or a documentary on the next place you are visiting. The Sun Deck is the ideal place to bask under the sun, read a good book or just gaze at the scenery. Dining is either inside in the classy interior dining room with its large windows providing beautiful views of the ports of call, or al fresco in the outdoor dining area. Both areas are able to accommodate all guests at one single seating, providing a high standard of cuisine, always with some local flavour. All cabins have en suite bathrooms with shower, and are equipped with individually controlled air-conditioning, flat-screen TV, DVD player, telephone for internal use, mini-safe, mini-fridge and hairdryer.
Harmony G: The sleek Harmony G motor yacht accommodates up to 44 guests. Category C cabins are on the lower deck with either a double or 2 lower beds; Category B cabins are on the main deck with 2 lower beds; Category A cabins are on the main deck with 2 lower beds; and Category P cabins are on the upper deck with 1 double or 2 lower beds. Stylish public areas include an indoor/outdoor lounge with its American Bar, a spacious sun deck, a main deck dining room, along with an outdoor dining area on the upper deck for al fresco dining.
Harmony V: The Harmony V mega yacht accommodates up to 49 guests. Category C cabins are on the main deck with 1 double bed; Category B cabins are on the main deck with 2 lower beds or 1 double bed; Category A cabins are on the upper deck with 1 double bed or 2 lower beds; and Category P cabins are on the upper deck with 1 double or 2 lower beds. Stylish public areas include the spacious interior lounge with its American Bar, an classy indoor dining area, and an outdoors dining area on the Sun Deck.
Itinerary
Day 1 : Dakar, Senegal
Late afternoon embarkation. Enjoy a welcome dinner before you set sail southward toward the Saloum River Delta.
Day 2 : Djiffer, Senegal > Banjul, the Gambia
Today, explore the Sine – Saloum Delta, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and also an Important Birding Area. A precious natural habitat for many bird species but also such aquatic animals as marine turtles, dolphins, West African manatees and crocodiles. Later in the afternoon set sail south to Gambia.
Day 3 : Banjul > Abuko Nature Reserves, the Gambia
Banjul is The Gambia’s capital city and gateway to the 700 mile Gambia River. You’ll sail the river this afternoon, but first there is an optional half-day tour of Banjul itself, plus the town of Bakau; known for its kachikally crocodile pool and botanic garden. Mid-afternoon sail upstream to Tendaba.
Day 4 : Tendaba, the Gambia
From the ship take motor pirogues to reach Tendaba, our starting point for the morning optional excursion. Visit the small fishing village whose approximate 600 inhabitants’ main occupation is fishing. Visit other small villages getting an impression of local life in The Gambia. In the afternoon, travel by motor pirogues for the afternoon optional excursion to the Bao Bolong Wetland Reserve.
Day 5 : Tendaba > Kuntaur > River Gambia National Park
Sail upstream to the bustling Gambian port town of Kuntaur, and enjoy a walking tour. Later, board a large motor pirogue for an optional excursion to Baboon Island, home of the Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Project. If you are lucky we can closely observe the chimps with minimal intrusion. It is also possible to see hippos, crocodiles, red colobus monkeys, green vervet monkeys and some of The Gambia’s famous birdlife.
Day 6 : Kuntaur > Janjanbureh > Kaur
Optional excursion to Janjanbureh one of the oldest towns of The Gambia, formerly called Georgetown. Later, there is a stop at the mysterious stone circles in Wassu, a megalithic site believed to be a burial ground thousands of years ago. Afternoon sail downstream to Kaur, a small fishing village. Walk around the small community and see how Gambians live today. In the evening we sail downstream towards Banjul.
Day 7 : Kunta Kinteh Island > Banjul
Anchor at St James Island, which was historically an important slave trading post under the British rule in The Gambia and is now UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. Optional walking tour. Continue the journey to reach Banjul and later in the evening, sail out of the Gambia estuary into the Atlantic Ocean northwards to Dakar.
Day 8 : Dakar
Early morning arrival in Dakar, and disembark after breakfast.
