Introduction
The Kodiak Brown Bear Centre is situated on a 58 acre site known as Camp Island on Karluk Lake.
Over 48 km of shoreline with countless tributaries results in the highest concentrations of salmon on Kodiak Island. This in turn offers visitors unparalleled access and opportunities to observe these fascinating bears in their natural habitat, from viewing areas in the field and from the centre’s catamaran. As well as bear activity around the perimetre of the lake, you may also spot a curious and entertaining population of local wildlife such as deer, fox, eagles and river otter.
Let us tailor-make your itinerary to include travel arrangements before and/or after your stay.
Itinerary
Day 1 : Kodiak > Kodiak Brown Bear Centre
On arrival in Kodiak you will be met and transferred to a float plane base, where you’ll embark on a 45 minute Alaska bush plane flight to the KBBC located on Camp Island on Karluk Lake. The lake has over 48 kilometres of shoreline with countless tributaries creating one of the richest and highest salmon concentrations on Kodiak.
This adventure offers visitors unparalleled access and opportunities to observe and study these legendary bears in their natural habitat. After a safety orientation and lunch you will be immersed into a guided bear viewing adventure.
The evening dinner is served in the Lodge’s gathering room. After dinner you’ll settle into your comfortable and well-appointed cabin for your first overnight stay at the Kodiak Brown Bear Centre. All guest cabins are directly at the water’s edge and each cabin has a private outdoor deck where bears and other wildlife can often be seen as well.
Day 2 : Kodiak Brown Bear Centre
After breakfast you’ll embark on another day of guided bear viewing to one of three prime viewing areas and enjoy a scenic wildlife tour of Karluk Lake aboard a heated catamaran vessel. Lunch and dinner is included with another night in your deluxe and well-appointed cabin at the Kodiak Brown Bear Centre.
Day 3 : Kodiak Brown Bear Centre
This is one of the most researched bear habitat areas in the world and you will likely have opportunities for interactions with researchers and wildlife photographers. There is a good chance to see bears all summer as the area is great habitat for sows and cubs. However, at the start of August the bear concentrations are beginning their peak due to the prolific salmon runs entering Karluk Lake through the Karluk River and this significantly increases the chance to see the bigger male bears called boars.
Day 4 : Kodiak Brown Bear Centre > Kodiak
In the morning after breakfast, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in a guided activity (bear viewing, kayaking or fishing). After lunch, you’ll check out and prepare for the return flight to Kodiak.
