Introduction
This trip combines a visit to the historic town of Colonia del Sacramento, a stop in the capital city of Montevideo and a boutique winery stay.
European immigrants introduced many varieties of cheese and wine to Uruguay, leaving the country with a legacy of vineyards, wineries, artisan cheese producers and olive oil plantations. Discover both the touristic and culinary highlights of Uruguay, and be prepared to be very pleasantly surprised by this ‘under the radar’ destination.
Itinerary
Day 1 : Montevideo > Colonia del Sacramento
Upon arrival at the Port of Colonia, you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel. Afterwards, commence an enriching half-day exploration of Colonia del Sacramento, a UNESCO World Heritage site steeped in captivating history. Founded by the Portuguese and fiercely contested by Spain and Portugal, Colonia’s enchanting past endures. Wander through the quaint cobblestone streets led by a knowledgeable local guide and uncover iconic landmarks including the old city gate (Porton de Campo), the storied Calle de los Suspiros (Street of Sighs), picturesque squares, and the revered Iglesia Matriz church. The experience also includes a delightful tasting of mate, a traditional local beverage, along with admission to a local museum to delve deeper into the city’s heritage
Day 2 : Colonia del Sacramento > Carmelo
Kick off our day with a transfer to Bodega el Quinton for a delightful experience exploring vineyards and olive plantations, followed by a tasting session of exquisite wines and premium olive oils. Our journey then leads us to La Vigna Cheese Farm, where you will immerse ourselves in the art of cheese-making and indulge in sampling some of the region’s finest cheese varieties, all under the guidance of the renowned “Cheese Architect”. Owners Agustin and Lucila have crafted a remarkable destination centred on sustainability and organic production, promising an exceptional tasting of their most flavourful and innovative cheeses. Additionally, there’s an optional cheese-tasting lunch available at La Vigna for an additional charge.
Day 3 : Carmelo
Embark on a journey to Finca Narbona accompanied by a guide, with an intriguing stop at Calera de las Huerfanas along the way. At “La Calera de las Huerfanas,” a National Monument about 70 kilometres away, delve into its history dating back to the 18th century. This was once the site where the Jesuits settled in the northern Province of Colonia, erecting their first structures in 1741. It served as a gathering place for Indians, slaves, and priests. After the Jesuits’ expulsion, Don Juan de San Martin took over the estate and stumbled upon 1500 grapevine stocks, marking the inception of wine production in Uruguay.
Later in the afternoon, proceed to Puerto Camacho for an unforgettable activity: the Rio de la Plata Sunset Cruise, lasting about 1.5 hours. Glide through the Delta islands, where the Rio de la Plata and Rio Uruguay converge, a significant meeting point known as “kilometre 0” for both rivers. Commencing just before sunset at the secluded Club del Faro marina, board a classic boat under the guidance of our captain. Listen to captivating tales of Uruguayan coasts, their legends, and maritime history, all while raising a toast to an extraordinary sunset.
Day 4 : Carmelo > Montevideo
Join your local guide for an exquisite journey through Carmelo’s wineries, a delightful exploration filled with tastings and a sumptuous lunch. You will visit two renowned wineries, Bodega El Legado and Bodega Cordano. Rooted in family history, Bodega El Legado emerged from Bernardo Marzuca’s heartfelt endeavour to reclaim ancestral vineyards. Their wines, produced using a unique wire-free vertical cord system, embody a commitment to unbounded expression. Wander through the vineyards, cellar, and production area during a guided tour.
Indulge in a tasting of 3 exclusive wines paired harmoniously with delectable cheeses, salamis, and olives. Led by Ana Paula Cordano and her husband, the family-run Bodega Cordano boasts a five-generation legacy. Experience a guided tour of the production areas and vineyards, concluding with a visit to the “Almacen de la Capilla,” a vintage grocery store established in 1855 by Antonio Cordano. Cap off the visit with a tasting of 3 exceptional wines and relish a delightful homemade lunch.
