Hoanib Skeleton Coast
Itinerary
Day 1 : Windhoek > Doro Nawas > Hoanib
On arrival in Windhoek airport you fly to Hoanib via Doro Nawas. You will spend two nights at Hoanib Skeleton Camp.
Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp is located on the Hoanib River in the northern part of the private Palmwag Concession. Its location thus straddles the Palmwag area and Skeleton Coast National Park, in one of the most remote areas of the Kaokoveld. Exclusivity is taken a step further as the camp comprises only seven twin-bedded tents and one family unit.
The camp looks out over stunning yet rugged scenery and offers you all the luxuries and amenities needed for an unforgettable stay. A bewitching and splendid part of the planet, you can unravel the enigmatic history of the original Strandlopers (Beachcombers), their stone circles lying in hidden valleys, studying the ancient Welwitschia plant, viewing the herds of desert-adapted wildlife, to savouring the endless landscapes unfolding – untouched – for hundreds of kilometres.
Days 2 & 3 : Hoanib
Today you will be met and taken to the local airstrip for your light aircraft flight to a remote area of Kaokoland. Upon your arrival you enjoy a scenic drive on the way to your camp where you will spend two nights.
You can enjoy the activities available at your camp such as nature walks, game drives, dune drives, use of hides, exploratory day excursions with picnic lunches and coastal visits (weather permitting).
Days 4 : Hoanib > Doro Nawas > Serra Cafema
Depart from Hoanib and fly to Serra Cafema Airstrip via Doro Nawas. Set in one of the most uninhabitable deserts in the world, Serra Cafema is an oasis surrounded by shady trees on the banks of the only permanent water source in the region. Offering an incredible insight into two completely different biomes, prepare to fall asleep to the sound of rushing water, while exploring the stark and unforgiving landscape by day.
You’ll be impressed with your luxury canvas and thatched chalet – only one of eight – with en-suite bathroom and elevated deck. Inspired by the local Himba people’s culture, this camp also has an attractive entertainment area, along with a plunge pool, which looks out over the bubbling rapids of the river. The activities on offer include walking, quad biking, driving, boating (water levels permitting) and engaging with the Himba, who move around according to the grazing needs for their livestock so may be in the villages or further afield. Game viewing includes gemsbok, springbok and Hartmann’s mountain zebra with a number of endemic reptiles. The river hosts a large population of Nile crocodiles.
Day 5 : Serra Cafema
Spend another full day exploring the activities available at your camp. Main activities revolve around the exploration of surrounding Namib Desert sands and the lush oasis along the river. Enlightening nature drives and carefully guided quad bike excursions through the fragile dunes allow you to experience the true Namib in its unbridled glory.
Day 6 : Serra Cafema > Doro Nawas > Ongava Private Game Reserve
Today fly to Ongava Private Game Reserve via Doro Nawas. Tucked away in the foothills of a dolomite hill, Ongava Tented Camp is one of Namibia’s best-kept secrets. You will be captivated by the bustling waterhole in front of camp as wildlife file through to quench their thirst.
Your accommodation will be one of the eight delightfully rustic en-suite Meru-style tents, built on a raised wooden deck which stretches out over the wilderness. The stone, canvas and thatched main area, with its relaxed swimming pool completes this intimate camp. Bordering the iconic Etosha National Park and set within its own wilderness haven, you can expect unrivalled game viewing complimented by the tranquillity of a private reserve. Game drives in both reserves will display a wide complement of wildlife including black-faced impala. Their predators, in particular lion, are never far away. Ongava is home to one of the largest black and white rhino populations in Namibia thanks to a successful reintroduction programme.
Day 7 : Ongava Private Game Reserve
Today you will be treated to an exciting morning guided game drive into the Etosha National Park, to see more of the wide variety of game and bird species that are to be found there before returning to Ongava Game Reserve for a late lunch. There is then time to relax by the refreshing swimming pool before you head out again for an afternoon game drive
Day 8 : Ongava Private Game Reserve > Windhoek
Fly to Windhoek Airport where arrangements end.
