Itinerary
Day 1 : Reykjavik
Arrive into Reykjavik and make your own way to the hotel. Early in the evening there will be an informational meeting at the hotel with your guide. You will learn more about the tour and meet other tour participants. Dinner is at your leisure.
Day 2 : Reykjavik > Gullfoss > Selfoss
Meet your guide and take a short tour of Reykjavik before heading to Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO heritage site and where the North American and European tectonic plates meet – you will have the unusual experience of walking between two continents. Next, visit the ‘Golden Waterfall’ of Gullfoss and the geothermal area containing the Geysir and Strokkur geysers. During the day you will get a glimpse into Icelandic local life. Visit an Icelandic family farm where tomatoes are grown using organic geothermal energy. Tour the greenhouse and sample some of the farm’s sweet Icelandic tomatoes. Dinner and overnight in the Golden Circle area.
Day 3 : Selfoss > Vik
Explore beautiful Thjorsardalur valley and visit the Viking-age longhouse replica at Stong. If conditions allow, you’ll also see the impressive and beautiful Mt. Hekla volcano towering over the region. Drive along the scenic farmlands of Iceland’s South Shore. Stop to admire the scenic waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss. Continue to Dyrholaey and thundering waves of the Reynisfjara black sand beaches. Overnight in Vik.
Day 4 : Vik > Hofn
Visit the southern area of Vatnajokull National Park – the largest in Western Europe. See the birthplace of icebergs at the stunning Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon where you will enjoy a breathtaking sight of icebergs floating in the incredible 180 metres deep glacial lagoon. End the day in the Hofn, a picturesque fishing port in the shadow of Vatnajokull glacier.
Day 5 : Hofn > East Fjords > Egilsstadir
Drive from Hofn through Almannaskard pass, stopping to admire the majestic coastline. Continue to the magnificent East Fjords and visit a local microbrewery, full of character and rustic design. Continue to Egilsstadir, located near Iceland’s largest forest and a lake said to be home to a legendary (friendly) monster.
Day 6 : Egilsstadir > Myvatn
Head to the Lake Myvatn area with stops at Modrudalsoraefi, Dettifoss (Europe’s most powerful waterfall), and the vibrant colours and boiling mud pools of Namaskard pass. Explore the natural beauty of the Lake Myvatn area, including the peculiar lava formations at Dimmuborgir and a cave with underground hot springs.
