Every time I go to Ecuador, I experience places that are so varied it’s hard to believe it is all in one continent, let alone in one country. After many years of visiting this special place, here are my top 10 highlights of Ecuador.
1. The Galapagos Islands
1,000km off the coast of Ecuador, these islands inspired Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, and are still home to a myriad of exotic species, not least the Blue Footed Booby! Cruising is the best way to explore the Galapagos, waking up at a new and unique island each day and exploring with expert guides. Alternatively, stay at the wonderful Finch Bay Galapagos Hotel, taking day trips out to the different islands. If you’re keen on more engagement with the local human species, an island hopping experience allows just that.
2. Quito
I have always thought that Quito has the best colonial centre of any capital city in Latin America, and UNESCO World Heritage agree! My favourite hotel in Quito is the delightful Casa Gangotena, right in the middle of the Old Town with its own fascinating history. The Old Town itself feels very authentic, and is perfect for a walking tour.
3. Cuenca
Also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Ecuador’s third largest city is its prettiest by far, with dozens of beautifully preserved historic buildings. Cuenca is also the best place for sampling cuy (guinea pig), i.f you dare, and is the true origin of the so-called Panama hat.
4. The Avenue of Volcanoes
Volcanic scenery is the majestic backdrop to horse riding, hiking and mountain biking in the aptly named Avenue of Volcanoes. This scenic valley runs south from Quito to Cuenca, boasting the most active volcano in Ecuador – Cotopaxi.
5. The Ecuadorian Amazon
Explore the pristine Amazon rainforest with its incredibly diverse fauna and flora either on a small ship cruise, or at an eco-lodge deep in the forest. One of our favourites is Sacha Lodge where you can walk amongst the treetops on the canopy walkway, soak up the knowledge of expert guides, and indulge in great cuisine.

“Of all the countries in South America, Ecuador steals my heart because nowhere else can you step seamlessly from ancient and colonial history into the wilds of the Amazon and the Galapagos, all against the dramatic backdrop of the high Andes.”

6. Haciendas
Staying in a traditional Ecuadorian farmhouse hacienda in the high Andes is a step back in time and a great insight into local culture. Dating back as far as the 16th century, their charm and character surpasses any city hotel for a truly authentic atmosphere.
7. The Devil’s Nose Train
One of the most spectacular rail journeys in the world, this train zig-zags up and down a 45-degree gradient of the “Narix del Diable” (Devil’s Nose) in the Ecuadorian Andes.
8. Otavalo
One of Latin America’s biggest and best indigenous markets, with local textiles and handicrafts, leather goods and a truly authentic feel. Go on Saturday when the market swells to its largest with sellers and buyers who head into town from the surrounding hills.
9. The Cloud Forest
Just over three hours from Quito, these mossy and misty forested mountainsides are home to prolific birdlife, frogs, butterflies and the rare Andean Spectacled Bear. Stay at Mashpi Lodge for the best guides and excursions – the diversity of hummingbirds here is spectacular. Wildlife lovers would do well to combine Mashpi Lodge with the Amazon and/or a Galapagos cruise for the ultimate South American safari experience.
10. The Equator
If time allows, head out to the equator at Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World), just outside of Quito. It’s the very spot where in 1736 explorers calculated the equatorial line in their efforts to prove that the Earth is round.
