Introduction
This land-based Galapagos adventure offers a mixture of wildlife, marine activities and great food while staying at boutique hotels.
Visit the islands of San Cristobal, Isabela and Santa Cruz, each very different and offering a wonderful array of experiences that unfold with the help of expert local naturalist guides. An ideal alternative to explore areas not possible to reach on the regular Galapagos Island cruises, and to better interact with the local people.
Itinerary
Day 1 : Arrive San Cristobal Island
On arrival in San Cristobal, enjoy a lunchtime briefing before visiting the Galapagos Interpretation Centre, followed by a walk to Frigate Hill with bird spotting along the way. Later, snorkel with sea lions and turtles and enjoy a glorious Galapagos sunset.
Day 2 : San Cristobal Island
Today you will explore the north coast of San Cristobal island, visiting either Leon Dormido (Kicker Rock) or Punta Pitt. The site visited will depend on the day of the week based on Galapagos National Park regulations. Your guides will make sure to search the nearby coves and cliffs for sea turtles, sea lions, frigate birds, blue-footed boobies, and Nazca boobies. Here you will have the chance to get up close and personal with sea lions in their favourite playground. While snorkelling, see eagle rays, golden rays, Galapagos sharks (considered harmless), starfish, clams, and thousands of tropical fish. As the sun sets on your day under the waves, return to your hotel for a relaxing evening.
Day 3 : San Cristobal Island > Isabela Island
Fly to Isabela, the largest island in the Galapagos. Shaped like a sea-horse, it was created by the eruption of six volcanoes that then joined together to create one of the younger islands in the Galapagos, and certainly the most impressive. On arrival, hike through a variety of eco-systems and observe giant tortoises in the wild. Later, delve into a group of small lava islands, full of life including reef sharks, sea turtles, marine iguanas and the amazing and unique Galapagos penguin. A penguin on the equator – who would have guessed?
Day 4 : Isabela Island
Drive into the highlands of Isabela observing a dramatic change in vegetation and, at more than 1,000 metres altitude, arrive at the enormous Sierra Negra volcano. At more than 12 kilometres wide, this is the second largest active caldera on earth. Also visit Chico Volcano, famous for its spectacular lava formations, before returning to the coast and enjoying some free time on a picture perfect beach.
Day 5 : Isabela Island > Santa Cruz Island
This morning, embark on a speedboat crossing to Santa Cruz Island. On arrival, transfer to the highlands to visit giant tortoises. Next, be amazed when you visit Los Gemelos, two massive volcanic sinkholes at the peak of the island situated in a Scalesia forest area rich in birdlife, especially by Darwin’s finches. If time permits, a visit will be made to the Charles Darwin Research Station later this afternoon.
Day 6 : Depart Santa Cruz Island
Transfer to the airport for departure.
