Introduction
Don’t expect a typical “cruise” experience – expect something more.
The Norwegian Coastal Express is a different kind of voyage. The journey, ships, ports and scenery and the history behind it results in a unique, special and authentic experience like no other.
Get close to the Norwegian nature and communities on board Havila’s coastal express. Every single nautical mile along the coastal cruise from Bergen to Kirkenes and back is filled with new experiences. The mountains are immutable, but the weather and the light change constantly, transforming the colours and appearance of the landscape. Here, you will encounter the soft grey of the rain, the crackling green of the Northern Lights or the golden glow of the midnight sun. Along the coast, tiny fishing villages shelter from the fierce Atlantic breakers, while larger coastal towns nestle in the narrow space between wild mountains and the seashore.
The Norwegian Coastal Express starts in the historic city of Bergen, and stretches all the way to Kirkenes. The 12-day voyage covers 2,500 nautical miles, showcasing unique scenes and landscapes that will take your breath away. Anchor at 34 different coastal ports, both day and night. In smaller locations the stops range from 10 to 45 minutes, but in larger cities you will get more time to explore. Destinations visited at night while heading north can be appreciated in daylight on the way back.
Your ships:
Built between 2021 and 2023, the Havila fleet of four ships are the newest on this Norwegian coastal route. Each accommodate up to 640 passengers in 179 spacious cabins featuring typical Nordic decor, designed for relaxation and a good night’s sleep. With a focus on sustainability, these vessels can cruise for four hours with zero emissions, utilising an energy-efficient hull design, powered by hydropower and large battery packs.
Onboard chefs hand-pick the best ingredients from local Norwegian producers to create traditional and modern dishes.
Most of the cabins have sea views, while others are located inside the ship. Cabins and suites range from 16m² to 45m², and can accommodate up to four people. All cabins have wifi and USB ports.
Itinerary
Day 1 : Bergen
The voyage starts in Bergen, the colourful capital of western Norway, where you can explore the UNESCO-listed Bryggen warehouses, ride the Fløibanen funicular for scenic views, indulge in fresh seafood at the fish market, or wander the lively harbour’s charming streets and quays. Bergen is the gateway to the Norwegian fjords and the start of your coastal adventure.
Day 2 : Floro > Molde
Sail past West Cape and arrive in Ålesund, known for its art nouveau architecture. During the summer months, you have the option to continue on to the stunning Geirangerfjord, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to witness its dramatic waterfalls and steep mountain landscapes. During the autumn months, visit the untouched and majestic Hjørundfjord.
Day 3 : Kristiansund > Rorvik
It is morning when you dock in the historic city of Trondheim, which was founded over a thousand years ago. The Nidaros Cathedral is the city’s major landmark. Furthermore, it is Norway’s national shrine and one of the largest cathedrals in northern Europe. After your visit here, the voyage continues towards northern Norway.
Day 4 : Bronnoysund > Svolvaer
As you journey further north, celebrate crossing the Arctic Circle with a ceremony before exploring the Arctic regions. Witness the Midnight Sun during the summer months or see the Northern Lights illuminate the winter sky. Encounter the awe-inspiring power of the world’s strongest tidal current, and spot the majestic sea eagles. In the evenings, you can explore the Lofoten fishing villages, admire the steep mountains, and learn about Viking history and heritage.
Day 5 : Stokmarknes > Skjervoy
As you continue through the narrow fjords and wild mountains, arrive in Tromsø, a city with a rich history associated with hunting, fishing, and polar expeditions. Tromsø is also a gateway to the land of the Sami, Norway’s indigenous people. Meeting the Sami and learning about their culture, including their unique connection with reindeer, is a truly unforgettable experience.
Day 6 : Hammerfest > Berlevag
This is as far north as you can get — by land and sea. For many, the visit to the North Cape is a highlight and a goal for voyages along the Norwegian Coast. Up here, in the polar landscape, nature is at its harshest and most desolate, but between bare plains and rugged cliffs, people cling on and reap nature’s bounty – and you can have a taste of the catch. How about some king crab?
Day 7 : Batsfjord > Kirkenes
Congratulations, you have now reached the easternmost point of your voyage! The border with Russia is only a few kilometres away, and you may notice that road signs in Kirkenes are written in both Norwegian and Russian. Consider joining one of our excursions to visit the border, or venture to the Snowhotel, where everything is crafted from ice and snow for a unique and memorable experience.
Day 8 : Mehamn > Tromso
As you sail west and south, the polar landscape transforms, giving way to towering peaks. In the evening, we’ll arrive in Tromsø, known as “The Paris of the North,” where you can attend a midnight concert in the Tromsø Cathedral or take a stroll in the stunning Midnight Sun or under the mesmerising Northern Lights.
Day 9 : Finnsnes > Stamsund
Next, return to the stunning and picturesque Vesterålen and Lofoten Islands. Enter the Vesterålen region in the morning, and in the evening, visit Lofoten. Along the coastline, you’ll discover chalky, white sandy beaches alongside charming fishing villages, which still thrive on a vibrant fishing industry. The locals rely on coastal ships for everyday transportation. If the weather permits, you’ll venture into the narrow Trollfjord.
Day 10 : Bodo > Rorvik
At this juncture of your journey, you have ventured so far south that you have left the polar lands behind and crossed the Arctic Circle. However, during winter, you may still witness the Northern Lights illuminating the night sky, while summer brings the magical Midnight Sun. As you sail, pass by numerous small islands, islets, and skerries, including the unique Torghatten mountain, which features a hole in its centre. If you’re up for it, consider joining a hike on the mountain and exploring the cavern.
Day 11 : Trondheim > Molde
Sail through the vast Trondheim fjord, flanked by rolling farmland on either side, before reaching the coast and the open sea once more. If you wish to disembark, Kristiansund offers the opportunity for a scenic bus tour along the Atlantic Ocean Road, considered one of the world’s most beautiful drives. The road winds along islets and skerries, and after the tour, you can rejoin the ship in Molde.
Day 12 : Torvik > Bergen
On the final day of your journey, you’ll travel through a varied coastal landscape that features rugged rocky mountains and an intricate network of straits and waterways between countless islands. The magnificent fjords and glaciers are located further inland. The voyage concludes in Bergen, but you have the opportunity for one last adventure – a captivating excursion through the city’s history, flavours, and breathtaking views.
