Introduction
El Costa Verde Express, formerly El Transcantabrico Clasico, is one of Renfe’s luxury trains of Spain.
Take a cultural and gastronomic journey through the country’s northern region, known as ‘Green Spain’. The carriages of the train take travellers back to the golden years of rail journeys, accompanied by all comforts and services of the 21st century.
During the journey, you will visit and explore places by the sea or in the mountains, charming squares and streets, museums, cathedrals, wine cellars and ports. Many stories and a wealth of history will be revealed by multilingual guides accompanying you on each trip. Lunch is the central event of the day, and in the afternoons you will alternate more excursions with activities on board the train, or just enjoy the scenery passing by before your eyes.
The Train: Each cabin is fully equipped to enjoy a comfortable stay onboard with only 24 suites. All have independent air-conditioning and a full en suite bathroom. Elegant and evocative carriages are used to serve a select breakfast, lunch or dinner, to enjoy a drink or to socialise with fellow travellers. To ensure passengers get a good night’s rest, the train will remain parked at a station at night.
Grand Class Suite: Features a double bed, desk, wardrobe, luggage compartment, minibar, safe and air conditioning with a separate regulator. Ensuites are equipped with private toilet, hydro massage shower, steam sauna, hairdryer and a set of welcome items and toiletries.
Itinerary
Day 1 : Bilbao > Santander
You are welcomed at a reception at Bilbao’s historic Concordia Station to mark the beginning of this rail experience through Green Spain. Take a city tour to discover the blend of tradition, contemporary architecture and urban transformation that defines the capital of Biscay today. A highlight will be a visit to the esteemed Guggenheim Museum. After lunch, travel on to Santander, crossing the landscapes of the Cantabrian coast. There is free time to enjoy the elegant atmosphere of the Cantabrian capital before dinner and your first overnight onboard the train in Santander.
Day 2 : Santander > Llanes
Breakfast on board as the train continues through green landscapes and small towns in northern Spain. Today travel to Santillana del Mar, one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Spain. After the visits and lunch, the journey continues into Asturias, following the Cantabrian coast to Llanes, a charming seafaring town open to the sea. Enjoy dinner and overnight onboard the train in Llanes.
Day 3 : Llanes > Oviedo
After breakfast, venture into the natural surroundings of the Picos de Europa and Arenas de Cabrales, where mountains, tradition and scenery shape one of the most evocative stages of the journey. After lunch, continue to Oviedo, the elegant capital of the Principality of Asturias. Explore its historic centre before returning to the train for dinner and overnight in Oviedo.
Day 4 : Oviedo > Luarca
The journey continues along the Asturian coast, alternating maritime scenery, small towns and sweeping views of the Bay of Biscay. A stop is made in Gijón, a city open to the sea and renowned for its cultural and culinary character. In the afternoon, the train heads for Luarca, the White Town of the Green Coast. Enjoy free time to enjoy its atmosphere before dinner onboard the train, which overnights in Luarca.
Day 5 : Luarca > Viveiro
As you enjoy breakfast on board, the train enters Galicia, travelling through some of the most beautiful landscapes on the Atlantic coast. The day combines a visit to Ribadeo and Taramundi, where tradition, nature and ethnographic heritage preserve the true essence of northern Spain. Arriving in Viveiro, enjoy dinner onboard and overnight.
Day 6 : Viveiro > Santiago de Compostela
On the last day, during breakfast, you will travel to Ferrol, where you will say goodbye to the crew and depart by coach to the Galician capital, Santiago de Compostela, for a visit and lunch. The tour ends approximately 4:30pm.
