Introduction
The word Zambezi is evocative of adventure, exploration, stunning vistas and prolific wildlife viewing – all focused on one of Africa’s greatest rivers which flows for over 2,500 km and drains a catchment basin five times the size of New Zealand.
Begin your journey at the Zambezi’s most noted landmark, Victoria Falls, before flying downriver to Mana Pools National Park – a World Heritage Site where the abundant water and vegetation result in a wealth of big game and allow for a range of river and land-based safari activities. Your next stop is beautiful Lake Kariba before ending your safari with three nights in Hwange National Park. Zimbabwe’s largest game reserve, Hwange is known as the land of the giants for its big elephant herds and is also home to lion, leopard, cheetah and African wild dog.
This itinerary can be tailor-made, with the number of days, places visited, and activities varied to suit you.
Itinerary
Day 1 : Livingstone
Private arrival transfer to Thorntree River Lodge – your fully inclusive luxury accommodation on the banks of the Zambezi River inside Zambia’s Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park.
Day 2 : Livingstone
Choose from a range of included activities such as a visit to Victoria Falls (Zambian side), sunset river cruise, rhino trekking on foot, game drives in Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park, cultural village and market visits, bush walks, catch-and-release shore fishing and canoeing. If you are lucky enough to be there during a full moon at high water (April to July) make sure you experience a lunar rainbow tour of the Falls!
Day 3 : Livingstone > Mana Pools National Park
Transfer to Victoria Falls Airport and fly to Mana Pools National Park in the heart of the Zambezi Valley. Enjoy two nights at Nyamatusi Camp, a safari lodge set in one of the wildest and most remote parts of Africa, on the banks of the Zambezi.
Day 4 : Mana Pools National Park
A full day of activities including morning and afternoon game drives along the Zambezi flood plain, walking safaris, canoeing and catch-and-release tiger fishing.
The Mana Pools National Park is known for wildlife visibility beside the river and in the flood plains. Large populations of elephants, hippos and Nile crocodiles gather at sunrise in the Long Pool.
Day 5 : Mana Pools National Park > Lake Kariba
Fly to Lake Kariba for two nights at Bumi Hills Safari Lodge with stunning hilltop views over the great inland sea and the game-rich shoreline below.
Day 6 : Lake Kariba
Bumi Hills offers guests a multitude of ways to explore Lake Kariba and its surrounds. The area is a walker’s paradise and professional guides will accompany you on a scenic lakeside safari to look for lion, cheetah, elephant, hippo and buffalo. Other options include game drives, sunset lake cruises, fishing for bream and tiger fish, cultural visits and stargazing.
Day 7 : Lake Kariba > Hwange National Park
Fly to Hwange National Park and spend three nights at Somalisa Camp or Somalisa Expeditions in the heart of the park on a private concession where game viewing is great all year! Nestled in a stunning location tucked away on an acacia island along the edge of an ancient seasonal flood plain, Somalisa provides guests with breath-taking views of the savannah plains and features a natural waterhole in front of camp where elephant and herds of game congregate to drink.
Days 8 & 9 : Hwange National Park
Somalisa Camp maintains a strong focus on guiding and hosting to ensure the ultimate guest experience. Activities include guided walks lead by qualified and passionate guides who love to share their knowledge and love of the bush, game drives, night drives, game viewing from hides, bird watching, walking and cultural tours of local villages.
