Introduction
Northern Botswana is all about contrasting ecosystems and their scenery, activities, fauna and flora.
This itinerary allows you to experience two of the best extremes of the natural world; the arid Kalahari and the lush Okavango Delta. San Camp is the perfect location to explore the remoteness of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. You will be awestruck as you learn how animals survive in this harsh landscape. After Kalahari Plains, head to Duke’s Camp where you will be able to contrast this experience with the oasis that is the Okavango Delta.
This itinerary can be tailor-made, with the number of days, places visited, and activities varied to suit you.
Itinerary
Day 1 : Maun > Kalahari Desert & Makgadikgadi Pans National Park
On arrival in Maun, Botswana, transfer via light aircraft to San Camp, your accommodation for the next three nights. The camp is located on the edge of the Nwetwe Pan and Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, surrounded by the expansive Kalahari Desert. The region is known for its salt flats, creating a surreal atmosphere that attracts a variety of bird species, lions, hyenas, cheetahs, elephants, springbok, hartebeest and more.
San Camp: White tents, shaded by desert palms and surrounded by a thousand acres of shimmering, sparkling nothingness. Meerkats pop up from the desert dust, brown hyaena hide in the grass, and you’ll see red hartebeest, springbok and gemsbok scurrying between them.
Days 2 – 3 : Kalahari Desert & Makgadikgadi Pans National Park
Spend the next two nights at San Camp enjoying game drives, bush walks and other thrilling activities.
At the end of the day, you can relax and unwind at the yoga and meditation pavillion or just indulge in delicious and innovative cuisine at the camp.
Day 4 : Kalahari > Okavango Delta
Fly from San Camp to Duke’s Camp in the Okavango Delta. Flying shows Botswana’s scenic contrasts; delta and desert; water and sand; verdant, thick bush and expansive wide-open spaces.
Activities include game drives, guided walks in the bush, a mokoro experience, and a cultural visit to a nearby village bordering the private concession. Afternoon drives are followed by a night drive before coming back to camp for dinner.
Duke’s Camp: is a striking safari destination set on a vast concession rich in game and natural beauty, and it lies waiting to be discovered. Pitched on raised wooden decks beneath a canopy of ebony and leadwood trees, the luxurious safari tents offer an unforgettable under-canvas adventure in the midst of this remarkable World Heritage Site. With expert guides honed in the bushcraft and lore of the Delta, there are few better ways to discover this wild landscape.
Days 5 – 6 : Okavango Delta
Enjoy twice daily activities including savannah and wetland wildlife: elephant, hippo, buffalo, lechwe, impala, plains zebra and giraffe, predator sightings: lion, spotted hyena and leopard, game drives, mokoro trips, nature walks & visits to African village and cultural experience.
Day 7 : Okavango Delta > Maun
Transferred via light aircraft from Duke’s Camp back to Maun for your onward journey.
NB: This tour combines very well with Untouched Wilderness (Namibia)
